The Wild Coast is a breathtaking coastal region in South Africa stretching between Port Edward and East London (formerly known as the Transkei). Pondoland is the northernmost section of this coastline and home to the Pondo people. It is widely considered the most pristine and undeveloped part of the country, famous for its dramatic sandstone cliffs and waterfalls that tumble directly into the ocean.
Because of our tropical climate, it is warm enough to hike all year round. While rain can fall in any month, it is most common during the summer (November to March). The “Prime Season” is May to August. These months offer drier conditions and the world-famous Sardine Run, where massive shoals of fish come close to the shore, attracting dolphins, whales, and birds for an incredible wildlife spectacle.
Mbotyi is located roughly equal distance from Durban and Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).

Our standard rates (starting at R3500 per person) are based on a group size of 10–12 people. We love hosting smaller, more intimate groups as well; however, for groups smaller than 10, the cost increases by R500 per person.
The hike is rated as moderate to advanced, largely depending on the weather. Interestingly, our shorter mileage days are often the most challenging due to the terrain—meaning we take a slow, adventurous pace. Our longer days tend to be flatter and more relaxed. We focus on providing a true “off the beaten track” adventure that you won’t find on commercial trails.
Daily distances range from 12km to 27km. While 27km sounds daunting, these longer days are the least technical and involve easy, enjoyable walking.
Yes. The Pondo people are world-renowned for their hospitality and welcoming nature. Once you leave the tar road and hit the dirt tracks of Pondoland, you are in one of the safest places in South Africa.
- Travel Note: Like most of South Africa, the main risks are on the road. We advise defensive driving due to potholes, roaming livestock, and reckless drivers on the main routes. Once you are with us on the coast, you can relax and enjoy the peace.
Our business model is unique. We are a joint venture between local community members and Donald Paterson, whose family has owned a cottage in Mbotyi for decades. This deep-rooted connection allows us to offer exclusive routes and accommodation that other companies simply cannot access. Because our entire team is born and raised in Mbotyi, we are truly embedded in the community, removing the “middleman” costs.
We embrace the “untouched” nature of the Wild Coast. Accommodation is delightfully rustic and authentic. You will stay in a mix of traditional beach cottages and eco-lodges. Some have electricity and mobile signal; others are completely “off-grid.” We encourage guests to switch off and appreciate the simplicity and peacefulness of the Pondoland wilds.
Yes! We are the only tour company that integrates Magwa Falls directly into our hiking route. In fact, our hike begins here. At 144 meters high, it is the second-highest waterfall in South Africa and a massive highlight for any traveler.
Most tourists fly from Gqeberha to Kruger, but they miss the heart of the country. The Wild Coast and the Drakensberg are the true gems of South Africa. Yes. We provide fresh, clean drinking water at all our accommodation sites. We also provide tea and coffee.
While we provide water, tea, and coffee, we know a cold drink is welcome after a long hike! You can order and pay for additional drinks in advance. We will purchase them and ensure they are cold and waiting for you upon your arrival.
We provide three hearty meals a day, focusing on classic South African favorites. Whenever nature allows and the season is right, we try to incorporate fresh seafood caught locally.
A high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended, especially during the rainy season. The dirt roads can become washed away or very slippery, making them difficult for standard sedans.
