Mbotyi Volunteer Beach Cleaner Project

Turning the tide on litter.

At MbotyiOnline, we are deeply committed to preserving the natural beauty of the Wild Coast and promoting sustainable living through eco-tourism. As part of our mission, we have launched a volunteer beach cleaner project to tackle the growing issue of litter along our stunning coastline. The Wild Coast, particularly the Pondoland region, is a place of unspoiled beauty, but plastic waste and rubbish have started to accumulate, threatening this fragile ecosystem.

To address this, we’ve brought together a dedicated team of volunteers who are passionate about keeping our beaches pristine. These volunteers work tirelessly, walking the beaches and collecting rubbish to protect the environment and preserve the Wild Coast for future generations.

How our project works.

What makes this project unique is the way we compensate our volunteers. They rely entirely on donations, and we’ve set up a fair, work-based payment system to ensure they are rewarded for the time and effort they contribute. At Mbotyi, we’ve installed signboards where visitors can easily donate using Snapper or Zapper.

Donations are pooled and distributed among the volunteers at the end of each month based on the number of days they have worked. We consider a days work to be 3 full rubbish bags. Thus this means that volunteers are only paid for the actual waste they pick up, not just for arriving at work.

The mechanism has been set up and is run monthly by Donald Paterson who is a chartered accountant with a passion for the Wild Coast. We believe transparency is key and Donald communicates all financial matters and donations with the volunteers.

How can you help?

We need your support to keep this initiative going. Every donation, big or small, helps us provide a livelihood for our volunteers and ensures that our beautiful Wild Coast remains clean and protected from harmful waste. Your contributions will directly benefit those on the ground who are doing the vital work of protecting our beaches.

If you’re visiting Mbotyi, look for our donation signboards and contribute via Snapper or Zapper. If you’re unable to visit but would still like to support, you can make a donation using the below QR codes or via eft to the bank account below. Please make your reference “Waste Project”.

Together, we can make a difference and ensure that the Wild Coast remains a treasure for generations to come.

Thank you for your generosity and for supporting this important cause. Please feel free to contact Donald for any additional information on +27 72 519 3834.
